Recreational and Sports Activities at Pye

In Cambridge a wide range of social activities took place due to number of Pye establishments in the City, the size and nature of the St.Andrews Road site with its river-side sports field, plus a second large open neighbouring field which was leased by Pye from Cambridge City Council. Going back in time, during World War 2, Pye Ltd even had its own volunteer Fire Brigade and Air Raid Precautions (ARP) Wardens.

In the 1940s a large wooden sports and social club was built adjacent to the ‘Radio Tower Corner’, as Pye called it, in St. Andrews Road. This remained in operation until the new ‘Site 1’ laboratory and factory building was completed in 1979. A new two-story, brick-built sports and social club building was then constructed which housed sports changing and shower facilities on the ground floor and on the second floor facilities for table tennis, darts, the lounge, bar and viewing balcony. A separate squash court was added later.
